Nicola Pohl, professor of chemistry and Wilkinson Professor of
Interdisciplinary Engineering, received her B.A. degree from
Harvard College in 1991 and her Ph.D. in chemistry from the
University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1997. Following an NIH
Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Department of Chemical Engineering
at Stanford University she joined the faculty at Iowa State
University in the fall of 2000 to study protein
biocatalysts/metabolic engineering, synthetic and analytical
methods, and carbohydrates. She is a member of the Department of
Chemistry and the Plant Sciences Institute and was named a Cottrell
Scholar of Research Corporation in 2003. Professor Pohl is the
recipient of a National Science Foundation CAREER award in 2004 and
was named an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow in 2005. In 2008 she
received the LAS Master Teacher Award and the LAS Mid-Career
Achievement in Research Award from Iowa State University. She
serves on the editorial boards of Carbohydrate Research,
Organic Reactions, and Chemistry Central Journal and is
co-Chair of the 2011 Carbohydrates Gordon Research Conference. She
was the 2010 recipient of the Horace S. Isbell Award from the
